Even though its prospects are being hyped already, the Ultra HD (4K) market could represent just a niche opportunity, in particular for satellite players, according to new research by NSR.
In its UltraHD via Satellite report, NSR concludes that the opportunity will be respectable once the market passes from its nascent stage starting from ?a low base in 2015 with just 15 channels being demanded by the combined global cable TV, IPTV and DTH industries. Going forward a decade from an $8.2 million revenue base at that time, NSR expects the global satellite UltraHD market to reach $412 million by 2025.
The analyst observes ?that TV manufacturers have been the first to step up to the 4KTV plate with the likes of Sony, LG and Samsung already unveiling UltraHD TV sets which will soon show content, principally films and sporting events, from a select number of media companies. It notes that contributing to the 4K ecosystem in the satellite industry is Eutelsat's launch of a dedicated UltraHD channel.
However, on a realistic note, NSR does concede that even though regarded by some in the industry as potentially 'the next big thing' or the largest revenue driver for satellite communication, UltraHD will only be a small niche with minimal impact in revenues and pay-TV channel carriage over the long term, relative to SD and HDTV growth. Furthermore it also warns that there will be a number of gating factors hampering commercial development of the UltraHD market such as level of risk taken by service providers, which it regards as key to ecosystem development.
"Real risk-taking has to come from TV content owners and service providers who will be delivering UltraHD to households,? commented the study's author senior analyst Jose Del Rosario. ?At this stage of the market cycle, there does not seem to be enough impetus towards substantial investments.?
