Researchers at the University of Chicago have found an association ...

Researchers at the University of Chicago have found an association between anxiety disorders and the gene that encodes Glyoxylase 1 (GLO1). However, the mechanism underlying this association is unclear. The most prevalent psychiatric diseases in the United States are anxiety disorders, which range from post-traumatic stress disorder to social phobia. Using a mouse model, Margaret Distler and her team set out to determine whether the primary substrate of GlO1, methylglyoxal, might have unproven neurological effects...

7 Hot Home Improvement Trends that Make Your Home Work for ...

Article From HouseLogic.com

?

By: Lisa Kaplan Gordon
Published: May 13, 2011

?

Home improvement trends embrace energy efficiency, low maintenance exteriors, and double-duty space.

?

Today's home improvement trends show that we like our houses to work harder and smarter for the money we spend maintaining and improving their value.

????????? ?We no longer want bigger; instead, we want space that's flexible, efficient, and brings order to chaos.
?

????????? ?We're watching our wattage with monitors and meters, and guarding our weekends with maintenance-free exteriors.
?

Here's a look at 7 hot home improvement trends that improve the way we live with our homes.

Trend #1: Maintenance-free siding

We continue to choose maintenance-free siding that lives as long as we do, but with a lot less upkeep. But more and more we're opting for fiber-cement siding, one of the fastest-growing segments of the siding market. It's a combination of cement, sand, and cellulosic fibers that looks like wood but won't rot, combust, or succumb to termites and other wood-boring insects.

At $5 to $9 per sq. ft., installed, fiber-cement siding is more expensive than paint-grade wood, vinyl, and aluminum siding. It returns 78% of investment, the highest return of any upscale project on Remodeling magazine's latest Cost vs. Value Report.

Maintenance is limited to a cleaning and some caulking each spring. Repaint every 7 to 15 years. Wood requires repainting every 4 to 7 years.

Trend #2: Convertible spaces

Forget "museum rooms" we use twice a year (dining rooms and living rooms) and embrace convertible spaces that change with our whims.

Foldaway walls turn a private study into an easy-flow party space. Walls can consist of fancy, glass panels ($600 to $1,600 per linear ft., depending on the system); or they can be simple vinyl-covered accordions ($1,230 for 7 ft. by 10 ft.). PortablePartions.com sells walls on wheels ($775 for approximately 7 ft. by 7 ft.).

A Murphy bed pulls down from an armoire-looking wall unit and turns any room into a guest room. Prices, including installation and cabinetry, range from $2,000 (twin with main cabinet) to more than $5,000 (California king with main and side units). Just search online for sellers.

And don't forget area rugs that easily define, and redefine, open spaces.

Trend #3: A laundry room of your own

Humankind advanced when the laundry room arose from the basement to a louvered closet on the second floor where clothes live. Now, we're taking another step forward by granting washday a room of its own.

If you're thinking of remodeling, turn a mudroom or extra bedroom into a dedicated laundry room big enough to house the washer and dryer, hang hand-washables, and store bulk boxes of detergent.

Look for spaces that already have plumbing hookups or are adjacent to rooms with running water to save on plumbing costs.

Trend #4: Souped-up kitchens

Although houses are trending smaller, kitchens are getting bigger, according to the American Institute of Architects' Home Design Trends Survey.

Kitchen remodels open the space, perhaps incorporating lonely dining rooms, and feature recycling centers, large pantries, and recharging stations.

Oversized and high-priced commercial appliances-did we ever fire up six burners at once?-are yielding to family-sized, mid-range models that recover at least one cabinet for storage.

Since the entire family now helps prepare dinner (in your dreams), double prep sinks have evolved into dual-prep islands with lots of counter space and pull-out drawers.

Trend #5: Energy diets

We're wrestling with an energy disorder: We're binging on electronics-cell phones, iPads, Blackberries, laptops--then crash dieting by installing LED fixtures and turning the thermostat to 68 degrees.

Are we ahead of the energy game? Only the energy monitors and meters know for sure.

These new tracking devices can gauge electricity usage of individual electronics ($20 to $30) or monitor whole house energy ($100 to $250). The TED 5000 Energy Monitor ($240) supplies real-time feedback that you can view remotely and graph by the second, minute, hour, day, and month.

Trend #6: Love that storage

As we bow to the new god of declutter, storage has become the holy grail.

We're not talking about more baskets we can trip over in the night; we're imagining and discovering built-in storage in unlikely spaces --under stairs, over doors, beneath floors.

Under-appreciated nooks that once displayed antique desks are growing into built-ins for books and collections. Slap on some doors, and you can hide office supplies and buckets of Legos.

Giant master suites, with floor space to land a 747, are being divided to conquer clutter with more walk-in closets.

Trend #7: Home offices come out of the closet

Flexible work schedules, mobile communications, and entrepreneurial zeal are relocating us from the office downtown to home.

Laptops and wireless connections let us telecommute from anywhere in the house, but we still want a dedicated space (preferably with a door) for files, supplies, and printers.

Spare bedrooms are becoming home offices and family room niches are morphing into working nooks. After a weekend of de-cluttering, basements and attics are reborn as work centers.

5 ways criminals use Facebook

9 hrs.

This Friday, Facebook?will go public in one of the most anticipated?IPOs in history. With more than 900 million users, Mark Zuckerberg?s expanding social media empire has become a seemingly irreplaceable part of the online experience. Unfortunately, a byproduct of its success is that millions of Americans are far more exposed to a number of cyber crimes that also teem on the site.

To be sure, cyber crimes have been occurring for some time, but the presence of social media has made many crimes much easier to commit. In social networks people make ?friends? without knowing the person and make personal information easily available. And none of the networks present more opportunity to criminals than Facebook and its hundreds of millions of users. With this in mind, 24/7 Wall St. looked at some of the most common ways criminals use Facebook.

There are the nine ways criminals use Facebook ? here are five. (You can read the rest at 24/7 Wall St.)

1. Hacking accounts
When criminals hack a Facebook account, they typically use one of several available ?brute force? tools, Grayson Milbourne, Webroot?s manager of threat research for North America, told 24/7 Wall St. in an interview. These tools cycle through a common password dictionary, and try commonly used names and dates, opposite hundreds of thousands of different email IDs. Once hacked, an account can be commandeered and used as a platform to deliver spam, or ? more commonly ? sold. Clandestine hacker forums are crawling with ads offering Facebook account IDs and passwords in exchange for money. In the cyber world, information is a valuable thing.

2. Commandeering accounts
A more direct form of identity theft, commandeering occurs when the criminal logs on to an existing user account using an illegally obtained ID and password. Once they are online, they have the victim?s entire friend list at their disposal and a trusted cyber-identity. The impostor can use this identity for a variety of confidence schemes, including the popular London scam in which the fraudster claims to be stranded overseas and in need of money to make it home. The London scam has a far-higher success rate on Facebook ? and specifically on commandeered accounts ? because there is a baseline of trust between the users and those on their friends list.

3. Profile cloning
Profile cloning is the act of using unprotected images and information to create a Facebook account with the same name and details of an existing user. The cloner will then send friend requests to all of the victim?s contacts. These contacts will likely accept the cloner as a friend since the request appears to be from someone they?re familiar with. Once accepted, the crook has access to the target?s personal information, which they can use to clone other profiles or to commit fraud. As Milbourne puts it, ?Exploiting a person?s account and posturing as that person is just another clever mechanism to use to extract information.? Perhaps what?s scariest about this kind of crime is its simplicity. Hacking acumen is unnecessary to clone a profile; the criminal simply needs a registered account.

4. Fake Facebook
A common form of phishing is the fake Facebook scam. The scammers direct users via some sort of clickable enticement, to a spurious Facebook log-in page designed to look like the real thing. When the victims enter their usernames and passwords, they are collected in a database, which the scammer often will sell. Once scammers have purchased a user?s information, they can take advantage of their assumed identity through apps like Facebook Marketplace and buy and sell a laundry list of goods and services. Posing as a reputable user lets the scammer capitalize on the trust that person has earned by selling fake goods and services or promoting brands they have been paid to advertise.

5. Mining unprotected info
Few sites provide an easier source of basic personal information than Facebook. While it is possible to keep all personal information on Facebook private, users frequently reveal their emails, phone numbers, addresses, birth dates and other pieces of private data. As security experts and hackers know, this kind of information is often used as passwords or as answers to secret security questions. While the majority of unprotected information is mined for targeted advertising, it can be a means to more pernicious ends such as profile cloning and, ultimately, identity theft.

Mladic goes on trial for atrocities in Bosnia

AMSTERDAM (Reuters) - Bosnian Serb general Ratko Mladic goes on trial for genocide on Wednesday, accused of leading the slaughter of 8,000 unarmed Muslim boys and men in Srebrenica in 1995, Europe's worst atrocity since World War Two.

Mladic, now 70, is the last of the main protagonists in the Balkan wars of the 1990s to go on trial at the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia in The Hague.

He is accused of orchestrating not only the week-long massacre in Srebrenica, at the time a U.N. "safe haven", but also the 43-month siege of Sarajevo, in which more than 10,000 people were killed by snipers, machineguns and heavy artillery.

The list of charges stemming from his actions as the Serb military commander in the Bosnian war of 1992-95 ranges from genocide to murder, acts of terror and other crimes against humanity.

But Mladic, who was arrested last May after 16 years on the run, has dismissed the charges as "monstrous" and says he is too ill to stand trial. The court entered a "not guilty" plea on his behalf.

The case has inevitably stirred up violent emotions in the Balkans. Survivors watching proceedings from the court gallery have shouted "Murderer!" and "Killer!" at a man nicknamed the "Butcher of Bosnia".

For his part, Mladic has been angry and defiant during pre-trial hearings, heckling the judge, shouting and interrupting the proceedings.

"The whole world knows who I am," he told a hearing last year. "I am General Ratko Mladic. I defended my people, my country ... now I am defending myself."

Mladic was in charge of the Bosnian Serb army when, over several days in July 1995, Serb fighters overran the Srebrenica enclave in eastern Bosnia, theoretically under the protection of Dutch U.N. peacekeepers.

Video footage shot at the time showed Mladic mingling with Muslim prisoners.

Shortly afterwards, the men and boys were separated from the women, stripped of identification, and shot.

BULLDOZED INTO GRAVES

The dead were bulldozed into mass graves, then later dug up with excavators and hauled away in trucks to be better hidden from the world, in dozens of remote mass graves.

Prosecutors say Mladic was part of a "joint criminal enterprise to eliminate the Bosnian Muslims in Srebrenica by killing the men and boys ... and forcibly removing the women, young children and some elderly men".

Mladic is also held responsible for the siege and bombardment of the Bosnian capital Sarajevo, which prosecutors said was intended to "spread terror among the civilian population".

The horrors of the siege, together with the Srebrenica massacre, eventually galvanized world opinion in support of the campaign of Western air strikes on Bosnian Serb targets that brought the conflict to an end shortly after.

Mladic was indicted in 1995 along with Radovan Karadzic, the Bosnian Serbs' political leader.

Yet both remained free in Serbia for more than a decade before being tracked down and sent to The Hague. Karadzic's trial is already under way.

Defense lawyers say they have not had have enough time to review the huge case file prepared by prosecutors and asked for the trial to be postponed, but the request was denied.

Serge Brammertz, the court's chief prosecutor, has dismissed Mladic's assertion that he is too frail to sit through a 200-hour prosecution case involving testimony from 411 witnesses.

His appearance in The Hague is testament to the work of the tribunal, which has defied skeptics by managing, in the course of 19 years, to arrest all its 161 indictees.

But some victims still fear that Mladic, who has received physical therapy for a possible stroke, could escape judgment by dying in mid-trial.

Mladic's mentor, former Serbian president Slobodan Milosevic, the architect of the Balkan wars, died in detention in 2006, a few months before a verdict in his trial for genocide and other war crimes in Croatia, Bosnia and Kosovo.

Beach chairs, children?s areas, windsurfing activities and even lifeguards are all a part of these exhilarating beaches. San Vito lo Capo, located near Trapani, is Sicily?s wow-factor for many tourists.?

?

Trapani consists of flat land. Salt and windmills are the attraction for both Trapani and Marsala. Some of the oldest salt marshes lie in Trapani; its windmills are also ancient. They are used to drain water from basins. Since salt extraction is a technology known to ancient Egyptians, it has flourished in Trapani even until now. Tourists will love the Dutch feeling that this region gives.?

Erice is Sicily?s main wine region, which stands alone on an isolated mountain. Captivating views, endless, rolling hills and very little traffic or noise, makes Trapani an exceptional factor to Sicily vacations. ?

Any vacation in Sicily would not be complete without exploring its great culture of wine, as well as wine tasting. Italy?s vast grape-growing regions lie to the west of Sicilia, surrounded by the Gibellina Mountains. Typically, this region is larger than other wine-rich areas such as Tuscany, Veneto or Piedmont- all in which are other great tour attractions.?

?

Golf, anyone? Yes, Sicily has five gorgeous eighteen-hole golf courses. From rolling hills, beautiful Carob and Olive trees and a heart of luxury, Sicily?s golf resorts are to be marveled at. They are well-maintained and not anything close to difficult for playing. Both the Piccolio and Madonie courses accommodate four-star lodging and can be easily accessed. There are several other suggestions that can be made for gorgeous resorts for a vacation to Sicily, especially one that an avid golfer would enjoy.

?

Ancient museums in Sicily make up more than half of its historical landmarks. Notable museums, as well as art galleries, display extraordinary collections in most major Sicilian cities, rather than its towns. Churches, libraries and certain archives also host amazing exhibits. Palermo?s Mormino and Pitre are both show-by-appointment museums where tourists can book showings. Phoning museums ahead for tourists is the best idea, in order to receive valid information on times, or tickets (if required). Admissions usually do not exceed five euros and sometimes, European citizens under the age of 18 and those over 60, will receive discounts.

scrambls

Facebook includes an option to limit readership of your posts to specific groups, but you have to remember to use it. Other social media sites may not offer similar protection. A scrambls (free) membership lets you take total control of who can read any post. It isn't military-grade encryption, but it works well for simple privacy, as long as all of your friends install it too.

To start using scrambls, you sign up for a free account and download the appropriate browser plug-in. The service currently offers plug-ins for Firefox, Chrome, Safari, and Fennec (Firefox's mobile browser for Android). There's no plug-in for Internet Explorer as yet, but the company is working on it.

The company specifically advertises that scrambls works with Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Google+, and Yammer, but it really should work for any social media site. If you discover a site where scrambls doesn't work, the company wants to know about it.

You type your post as usual, but when you send it scrambls replaces the text with a social-media-friendly encrypted version. If you're logged in to scrambls you'll still see the plain-text post. If not, or if you're not authorized to see the post, it looks like gibberish.

Defining Groups
Out of the box, scrambls defines two groups, Everyone and Only Me. A post scrambld for the Everyone group will be visible to any other scrambls user; a post set to Only Me can't be viewed by anyone but you.

You'll probably want to define your own groups to control access. Unfortunately you can't import your friends list from Facebook. The simplest way to define a group is by using a list of email addresses. According to the scrambls site, "We will soon be adding support for other identifiers, such as a Facebook id, as well as the ability to assign multiple identifiers to one account."

Scrambls offers a number of advanced methods for defining a group. You can include entire domains, for example, to keep certain posts accessible only within your company. You can also exclude specific domains or addresses.

One way to avoid entering an endless list of addresses is the shared secret technique. You define a shared secret (basically a passphrase) for the group. Any scrambls user who wants to view posts assigned to this group must enter the passphrase to see the plain text.

Group rules can also determine just when a post can be viewed. You can control the beginning and ending date for viewing of posts to a group, or set posts to become active and expire after a specified time. For business users, there's an option to authenticate users via an external service; setting this up will require help from scrambls tech support.

Your initial choice of group for a post isn't set in stone. At any time you can right-click a scrambld post and choose a different group. Setting a post to the Only Me group effectively hides it from everyone else.
