September is upon us. School?s back in swing. A crispness is in the air. And it seems that all the art galleries in town are coming off their summer breaks with wonderful exhibitions. Here?s your arts round up this week Calgary.

MUMMERIN TIME: Suzen Green?s upcoming exhibition The Mummers Party combines theatrical staging with sculptural knitted installation opening this week at the Stride Gallery?s Project Room.

Goin? a Mummerin?
It?s a strange custom that involves dressing up in disguise (usually with the help of many layers, sheets and toques), heading over to the homes of friends and family, entertaining and guessing. Mummering, a Newfoundland tradition, is coming to Calgary with a new art show The Mummers Party by Suzen Green.
Suzen is a Calgary based textile artist who?s heart still resides in Newfoundland. And now she?s bringing a taste of the Island to the Stride Gallery?s Project Room (1004 MacLeod Trail SE). Running September 7 to October 5, The Mummers Party combines theatrical staging with sculptural knitting to create a unique exploration of culture, lore and craft.
The opening takes place September 7, 8pm to midnight and coincides with the opening of Tinctorium by Bill Morton.
Tincorium runs in the Main Space until October 19 and features work by the Calgary-based artist and teacher who uses mulberry paper stencils and extracted dyes to produce beautiful cloths.

Hearts of the New West
A really neat exhibition opens this week here in Cowtown.
Hearts of the New West: The 2012 Calgary Biennial is a group exhibition taking place simultaneously at a number of different venues ? AVALANCHE!, The Contemporary Art Gallery of Calgary, The #000000 Gallery, Haight Gallery, 809 Exhibition Space and more? that brings together 24 Calgarian artists who have set out to show the notion of ?home? though their art.
The exhibition runs September 8 to the 29 but the thing to do is the opening recepetion at 7pm on the eighth. It will be of a gallery-hop that starts at AVALANCE! (1235 Macleod Tr SE), heads to the 809 Exhibition Space at 8:30pm (809 5th Ave NW) and finishes off at the Haight Gallery around 10:00pm (2018 24th Ave NW). Artists and curator will be about at the reception and it?s free to the public.

Congrats to Betty Winners
Calgary?s theatre ?lite came together last week to celebrate the best of the best at the 2012 Betty Mitchell Awards.
Alberta Theatre Projects took home most of the top awards including best production and lighting design for Mary?s Wedding and wins for Playing with Fire, The Wizard of Oz and Ash Rizin.
Playing with Fire: The Theo Fleury Story was a huge overall winner for ATP with three Bettys ? Shaun Smyth took home best actor in a drama for his performance in the one man play, Ron Jenkins won outstanding direction and David Fraser won the Betty for set design.
John Pennoyer won best costume design for his work on The Wizard of Oz.
Ash Rizin won two Bettys for its stars Allison Lynch and Kyle Jesperson for their supporting roles as well as best sound design.
Vertigo Theatre?s Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street took home three awards including best musical production, best direction (Stephen Woodjetts) and best actor in a musical (Kevin Aichele).
Other winners were Nicola Cavendish, best actress in a comedy or musical for Theatre Calgary?s Shirley Valentine, Julie Mackey, best actress in a drama for Lunchbox Theatre?s Jake?s Gift, and Anita Miotti, best choreography for Urban Curvz?s Hunger Striking.
And best new play was split by Peril in Paris by Ethan Cole and Eric Rose and Drama: Pilot Episode by Karen Hines.

The Options That Are Offered to Us
It?s an immersive installation, in two parts.
The Options That Are Offered To Us: The Least Likely/ The Most Tolerable openings September 7 at the TRUCK Gallery (815 First Street SW) by SERIPOP (Yannick Desranleau and Chloe Lum). The installation is made of of screen printed posters that use architectural elements to expand the space of the gallery and to take you on a journey through multiple streams of thought.
The opening reception takes place this Friday, September 7 at 8pm and the artists will be in attendance. It?s open to the public and free. For more information, check out TRUCK?s website.

Calyx Calgary Deadline
Calyx Distinctive Arts hosts art exhibitions and sales twice annually in both Calgary (24th show) and Edmonton (5th show) and they?re looking for submissions.
The deadline for both shows is September 9 with the exhibitions running October 21 and 22 in Calgary and November 3 in Edmonton. The three directors exhibit and sell their own work during the shows and are looking for other qualified artists to join. The submissions will be chosen by jury by September 14.

Fall Banner Exhibition opens at the Art Gallery of Calgary
One of the biggest, most anticipated fall shows opens this week at the Art Gallery of Calgary (117 8th Ave SW).
Fall Banner Exhibition 2012 runs September 7 to December 23 and features five different shows in five different spaces though out the Gallery.
The exhibition opens Friday, September 7 with a public reception presented by TD Bank from 6:30pm to 10pm with live performances and an outdoor Alley Party featuring BassBus, La Caravan Dance Theatre and Art of Sound.
Gregory Hardy?s An Exploration of Landscape Drawing will be in the Main Gallery with his large landscape drawings. Inspired by Jogakbo by Diana Un-Jin Cho will fill the Tall Gallery with beautiful traditional quilts inspired by Korean jogako designs. Jennifer Akkermans? Institute of Morphiod Research will take over the Media Gallery. Photographer Jeremy Fokkens? I am Calgary will fill the Mezzanine/Studio Gallery with highly detailed back and white portraits of contemporary Calgary. And Thinking Big, Unveiling Public Art Projects will be shown in the Top Gallery featuring work by many artists and a partnership with the Alberta Crafts Council and the City of Calgary.

Reclamation Through Etchings
If you?re looking for something to do this month, the Alberta Printmakers? Society and Artist Proof Gallery (2010F 11 Street SE) is presenting a great show.
Reclamation: Etchings and Lithographs by Curtis Bartone opens September 5 with an opening reception Friday, September 7 at? 6:30pm. There will also a public lecture with the artist that evening, starting at 5:30, and a print demonstration the next day, September 8, at 1pm.
