Sony set to name Kazuo Hirai president as Howard Stringer steps aside
Sony has reportedly decided on Kazuo Hirai as its next company president.
Japanese newspaper Nikkei Business Daily said that the company plans to have Hirai take over the post in April, while current president and chief executive Sir Howard Stringer will remain in the CEO and chairman titles.
Hirai currently serves as chairman for the company's Sony Computer Entertainment America branch. Last year, he was charged with leading the company through its disasterous PlayStation Network data breaches.
The report comes just days before the company is expected to unveil its latest creations at the 2012 Consumer Electronics Show. Sony is expected to unveil a number of products to the press just hours before the show's opening keynote Monday evening.
Hirai's appointment as president also comes as the company looks to consolidate its mobile operations and shake off lingering worries over the security of its platforms.
The company in October shelled out ?1.05bn to purchase the remaining portion of shares in its joint handset venture with Ericsson in a deal industry analysts believe will help Sony make a push for a larger share of the mobile handset market.
Sony remains a popular target for hackers, however. The company's controversial stance on copyright protection and device modification continue to make Sony entertainment platforms a popular target for hacktivist groups such as Anonymous.

Android Apps to Surpass iOS Downloads by 2016
According to a post in Android Developers aimed to help developers prioritize the development of application features for the devices currently in the hands of users, tablets running on Honeycomb 3.0, 3.1, and 3.2 is at 0.1%, 1.5%, and 1.7% respectively. Honeycomb is the Android version made specifically for tablets so if you look at these numbers, you?d think that there are only a few Android tablets used.
An article from ZDNet states that ?the figures just released show that of all Android devices activated to date, only 3.3% of them run Android 3.x, aka Honeycomb. Honeycomb only runs on tablets, so the numbers paint an accurate picture of just how few Android tablets have been activated. If we use Andy Rubin?s latest tweet claiming 200 million devices have been activated to date, that 3.3% running Honeycomb only represents 6.6 million Android tablets.?
Forever fragmented
A lot of Android tablets sold don?t really have the latest version of Android when they get activated. ?And as we all know, not everyone who owns a computer, tablet or even a smartphone has the wits to update their devices?regularly. ?Most device owners are clueless as to what the versions of Android mean for their devices; what?s important for them is that they have a device to use.
Ice Cream Sandwich on the rise
On the upside, the number of devices running Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich is rising, and will continue to do so. ?As stated in the Android Developers blog, 0.3% of devices are running Android 4.0-4.0.2, while the other 0.3% are running Android 4.0.3. ?ICS is the Android version compatible for both tablets and smartphones, though not all Android devices would get it as not all of them will pass the requirement for the update. Still, the most popular version of Android is Gingerbread at 55%.
An appy Android future
Currently, Android app downloads lag far behind app downloads for iOS devices. ?There are various reasons for the huge gap in numbers, one of which is the fragmented OS update for Android which affects the development of apps. ?Another reason is that there are a lot of android devices which makes it hard for developers to come up with apps that would be compatible for all of those devices. ?But this situation may soon be resolved when the ICS rolls out in the majority of Android devices. ?The ICS would make Android more uniform, easing the app development process.
?Discounting all those apps that were originally developed for Android smartphones, Android still trails greatly behind the iPad in terms of its tablet app offerings,? says research associate Lim Shiyang. ?Many Android tablets in the market are still using older versions of Android, which disadvantages users from enjoying the better effects of apps produced from more advanced software development kits.?

Obesity, Hepatitis C Infection Linked to Liver Cancer Risk
Two recent Mayo Clinic studies offer a clearer picture of the rise of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), or liver cancer, which has tripled in the U.S. in the last three decades and has a 10 to 12 percent five-year survival rate when detected in later stages.
"The studies illuminate the importance of identifying people with risk factors in certain populations to help catch the disease in its early, treatable stages," said W. Ray Kim, M.D., a specialist in Gastroenterology and Hepatology and principal investigator of one study.
Dr. Kim's research group looked at several decades of records in the Rochester Epidemiology Project, a database that accounts for an entire county's inpatient and outpatient care.
The study found the overall incidence of HCC in the population (6.9 per 100,000) is higher than has been estimated for the nation based on data from the National Cancer Institute (5.1 per 100,000). The study also found that HCC, which two decades ago tended to be caused by liver-scarring diseases such as cirrhosis from alcohol consumption, is now occurring as a consequence of hepatitis C infection.
"The liver scarring from hepatitis C can take 20 to 30 years to develop into cancer. We're now seeing cancer patients in their 50s and 60s who contracted hepatitis C 30 years ago and didn't even know they were infected," noted Dr. Kim.
Eleven percent of cases were linked to obesity, in particular fatty liver disease.
"It's a small percentage of cases overall. But with the nationwide obesity epidemic, we believe the rates of liver cancer may dramatically increase in the foreseeable future," Dr. Kim says.
Another study looked exclusively at the Somali population, which is growing in the U.S., particularly in Minnesota, where as many as 50,000 Somalis have settled in the last two decades. The East African country is known to have a high prevalence of hepatitis B, a risk factor for HCC.
Researchers investigating records in the Mayo Clinic Life Sciences System confirmed that hepatitis B remains a risk factor, but they were surprised to find that a significant percentage of liver cancer cases in the population are attributable to hepatitis C, which had not been known to be significantly prevalent.
The studies have been published in the January issue of Mayo Clinic Proceedings.

Samsung to release white Galaxy S II Epic 4G Touch, Galaxy Nexus (Digital Trends)
Samsung is about to release a bunch of white phones. That?s right, white! But not just regular ol? white ? ?Frost White.? Don?t get too excited.
According to a press release out this morning, the robustly named Samsung Galaxy S II Epic 4G Touch will be available in Frost White through Sprint staring on January 8, this coming Sunday. Customers can purchase the device at Sprint retail stores, through Sprint.com, or over the phone (1-800-SPRINT1). Like the black version of the Epic 4G Touch, the white model will go for $200 with the signing of a new two-year contract, or for customers who have an eligible upgrade.
Sprint will also offer the ?simple and practical? Samsung M370 flip-phone in ?Pewter Gray? starting on Sunday. That device only costs $20 with a two-year contract or ?upgrade.?
Moreover, Phandroid reports that a white version of the Galaxy Nexus will arrive at select mobile retailers in the UK in February. The lucky retailers will include Clove and MobileFun, and the device will sell for around ?500. So far, we?ve heard nothing about a white Galaxy Nexus making its way to the US. And considering how long it took Verizon to release the device in the first place, we wouldn?t recommend holding your breath.
As a side note: We?d like to request that Samsung, Sprint, and whoever else is in charge of naming these devices, goes with something that?s not so ridiculous as the Galaxy S II Epic 4G Touch. It?s ever-so confusing, especially when the same basic device has different names depending on which carrier is offering it. We can?t imagine that does anything to help sales. And as a customer, we?d likely just go with the iPhone, since you don?t need a thesaurus to know what device you?re purchasing.
