Harvard researchers create room-temperature quantum bits that store information for nearly two seconds

It's a challenge that's long been one of the holy grails of quantum computing: How to create quantum bits, or qubits the key building blocks of quantum computers - that exist in a solid-state system at room temperature. Most current systems, by comparison, rely on complex and expensive equipment designed to trap a single atom or electron in a vacuum then cool the entire system to close to absolute zero.

A group of Harvard scientists, led by Professor of Physics Mikhail Lukin and including graduate students Georg Kucsko and Peter Maurer, and post-doctoral researcher Christian Latta, say they've cracked the problem, and they did it by turning to one of the purest materials on Earth diamonds.

Using a pair of impurities in ultra-pure, laboratory-grown diamonds, researchers were able to create quantum bits, and store information in them for nearly two seconds an increase of nearly six orders of magnitude over the lifespan of earlier systems. The work, described in the June 8 issue of Science, is a critical first step in the eventual construction of a functional quantum computer, as well as a host of other potential applications.

"What we've been able to achieve in terms of control is quite unprecedented," Lukin said. "We have a qubit, at room temperature, that we can measure with very high efficiency and fidelity. We can encode data in it, and we can store it for a relatively long time. We believe this work is limited only by technical issues, so it looks feasible to increase the lifespan into the range of hours. At that point, a host of real-world applications become possible."

In addition to a practical quantum computer, Lukin envisions the system being used in applications that include "quantum cash" a payment system for bank transactions and credit cards that relies on the coding of quantum bits to thwart counterfeiters and quantum networks a highly secure communications method which uses quantum bits to transmit data.

"This research is an important step forward in research toward one day building a practical quantum computer," said Kucsko, a graduate student working in Lukin's lab and one of two first authors of the paper. "For the first time, we have a system that has a reasonable time-scale for memory and simplicity, so this is now something we can pursue."

Tom Cruise tops best-paid actors list with $75M

NEW YORK?-- Tom Cruise led Forbes' annual list of the 100 highest paid actors released on Tuesday, earning nearly twice that of second place Leonardo DiCaprio and recapturing his spot among Hollywood's top-earning performers after his recent blockbuster movie "Mission: Impossible."

Cruise, who turned 50 years old on Tuesday amid speculation over whether his box office pull could be hurt by his impending divorce from Katie Holmes, which was revealed late last week, earned $75 million between May 2011 and May 2012, Forbes said.

The star is coming under close scrutiny after Holmes filed for divorce and sought sole custody of their young daughter, Suri. Some have questioned his affiliation with the Church of Scientology, including media mogul Rupert Murdoch, who likened its practices to a cult.

Forbes said Cruise in particular had enjoyed a successful year after "Mission Impossible?-- Ghost Protocol," released last December, earned more than $700 million at global box offices.

His career resurgence followed negative publicity several years ago due to a couch-jumping episode on Oprah Winfrey's talk show and some rambling thoughts on Scientology in media interviews and in a YouTube video.

Last year's top earner DiCaprio, 37, tied for second place on the list with funnyman Adam Sandler, 45, both with $37 million.

DiCaprio's earnings dropped after his 2010 "Inception," grossed $825 million at the global box office while his last film, "J. Edgar" disappointed at the box office. Sandler's income included his paycheck from 2011 film "Jack and Jill."

Former professional wrestler Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, 40, came in fourth, earning $36 million including from his film "Fast Five" that took in $626 million worldwide, and at No. 5 was comedian Ben Stiller with $33 million, whose next film "The Watch" about a group of Neighborhood Watch dads, is due for release in July.

In compiling the list, Forbes considers factors including upfront pay, profit participation, residuals, endorsements and advertising work.

People with type 2 diabetes are at risk of several types of cancer, including a 40% increased risk of bladder cancer, compared to people without diabetes. Previous studies have shown a higher incidence of bladder cancer in people taking pioglitazone, a type of thiazolidinedione.

To determine whether there is a link between pioglitazone use and bladder cancer, researchers conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials and observational studies involving over 2.6 million patients.

"We observed an increased risk of bladder cancer associated with the use of thiazolidinediones," writes Dr. Jeffrey Johnson, School of Public Health, University of Alberta, with coauthors. "In particular, use of pioglitazone was associated with an increased risk of bladder cancer based on a pooled estimate from three cohort studies involving more than 1.7 million individuals."

The researchers also looked at a possible association with rosiglitazone, another type of thiazolidinedione, but did not see an effect.

"Although the absolute risk of bladder cancer associated with pioglitazone was small, other evidence-based treatments for type 2 diabetes may be equally effective and do not carry a risk of cancer," conclude the authors. "This study quantifies the association between pioglitazone use and bladder cancer and may help inform decisions around safer use of pioglitazone in individuals with type 2 diabetes."

Amelia Earhart search missions begins: five others that failed

An expedition to search for the lost aircraft of Amelia Earhart leaves Hawaii Tuesday with high hopes. But many have tried, and failed, to find conclusive evidence before.?

On July 2, 1937, the famed aviatrix and navigator Fred Noonan disappeared after missing their intended destination of Howland Island, a speck of coral in the vast blue of the central Pacific. A massive sea and air search conducted by the US government found no trace of the pair or their Lockheed Electra 10E.

Ever since researchers, scientists, history buffs, and plain dreamers have longed to succeed where Uncle Sam failed and find evidence ? a wing, traceable equipment, perhaps an entire aircraft ? which uncovers the story of her fate.

The latest search for Amelia planned to leave Hawaii on Tuesday, bound for the remote Pacific archipelago nation of Kiribati. The $2.2 million expedition has been organized by The International Group for Historic Aircraft Recovery (TIGHAR). Previous TIGHAR trips have located debris which hints at the possibility that Earhart and Noonan ended up marooned on Nikumaroro, an uninhabited island that today is part of Kiribati, after a forced landing.

Now the group will used sophisticated underwater gear to search a spot where they believe tides and ocean currents may have deposited Earhart?s plane some 75 years ago.

?Everything has pointed to the airplane having gone over the edge of that reef in a particular spot and the wreckage ought to be right down there,? said Ric Gillespie, TIGHAR founder, according to the Associated Press. ?We?re going to search where it ? in quotes ? should be. And maybe it?s there, maybe it?s not. And there?s no way to know unless you go and look.?

Among the evidence TIGHAR says it has accumulated from Nikumaroro is a zipper from 1930s clothing, a cosmetic bottle which resembles those used by an anti-freckle cream sold in that era, and human bone fragments. But it?s important to keep TIGHAR?s work, however promising, in context. Many searches for Earhart have come up empty over the years.

The first search. The official search began only an hour or so after the last recorded Earhart transmission. The US Coast Guard cutter Itasca searched north and west of Howland Island, on the theory that Earhart and Noonan had simply missed their landing spot by a short distance.

?Itasca searched throughout the day to the northward of Howland Island and during the night of 2-3 July with searchlights, extra lookouts posted and all hands on the alert,? reads a Coast Guard report of Itasca?s mission.

ScienceDaily (July 3, 2012) ? A*STAR scientists transform vast amounts of data into applications and systems that are able to analyse crowd behaviour, allow remote energy management or even tell where some of the windiest spots in the city centre are.

It's not about how much information you have but what you can do with it that matters. This is the case for the deluge of data and information that abounds in today's fast paced, information technology-dependent environment. A*STAR scientists have developed technologies that capture and analyse huge amounts of data to create systems that enhance urban living. These include technologies that track crowd behaviour, smart energy management systems, as well as advanced modeling techniques that simulate city microclimates or predict disease outbreaks.

A*STAR Science and Engineering Research Council's (SERC) 'Sense and Sense-abilities' programme will focus on pervasive sensing to address challenges that city planners face in developing urban environments. A demo has been set up at the World Cities Summit (WCS) 2012 Expo to showcase the programme's capabilities. The demo gathers visual, sound and floor pressure data, which is then translated into 'smart' crowd maps that decipher popular travel paths or identify areas with less traffic. Such technologies can be used for targeted marketing or enhancing product placements in malls and retail shops, or deployed in traffic management systems to identify potential congestion hotspots.

As the power demands of cities grow, the deployment of smart grids and smart devices that regulate energy usage in the mass consumer electricity market becomes essential in helping cities manage their energy requirements. The A*STAR smart energy showcase demonstrates how 'Smart Plugs' can be used to remotely monitor and control home appliances over the internet, highlighting the significant role energy consumers and end-users play in achieving energy efficiency targets in the future.

The urban environment can also be modeled to allow city planners to see what future cities could look like. For example, data on wind flow patterns in dense areas like city centres can provide city planners with a better view on how to manage microclimates and reduce 'hot spots'. Weather and genomic data, coupled with information on past outbreaks can also be used in combating diseases by predicting possible outbreaks and allowing effective intervention strategies to be implemented earlier.

Cities need to find novel ways of manufacturing products sustainably and to reduce the reliance on non-renewable resources. It is then essential for individuals as well as companies to understand their carbon footprint in order to reduce the impact they have on the environment. A*STAR's sustainable manufacturing research promotes processes that efficiently recycle used materials, reduces a manufacturer's carbon footprint and looks into technologies that can be employed for sustainable urban living.

"As we urbanise, science and technology will play an important role in optimizing the use of resources and improving lives," said Dr. Raj Thampuran, Executive Director of A*STAR SERC. "A*STAR's highly engaging and exciting technology showcases provides an insight of how future cities may function in an even more intelligent and sustainable environment."

The data-centric research projects and sustainable manufacturing technologies from A*STAR research institutes such as the Institute for Infocomm Research (I2R), Institute of High Performance Computing (IHPC), Singapore Institute of Manufacturing Technology (SIMTech) and Genome Institute of Singapore (GIS), are being showcased at the Whole-of-Government Pavilion that is part of the WCS 2012 Expo.
